Restaurante El Monasterio
Probably the worst meal and service I have ever had in Spain and I have lived in Spain (Madrid) for nearly twenty years. We had a reservation for 20:30 on a Saturday night . As Madrileños this was fairly early but they were only taking reservations until 21:30 so we decided to go and have a very early dinner in case it was busy! Not a chance...... it was empty and now we know why...! There are several restaurants/bars in the old Monastery and we chose the fish restaurant....big mistake... We ordered specific types of gin-tonic and cava as aperitifs, These were poured at the bar and their provenance (type of gin or cava) is still a mystery....... sorry but even the cheapest cafe in Spain brings the drinks to the table in the bottle and pours them at the table so that you can see what you are getting and so you can decide how strong a mixed drink is....this is basic. Meanwhile other customers arrived; a young Russian couple with a child about 4 years old. We and the Russians were the only people eating that night so we had plenty of space (the other 35 tables in the fish restaurant were empty) and you would expect fairly good, attentive and quick service. No such luck! No wine list was brought with the menu and the waiter seemed surprised that we would not drink the house wine. Nevertheless, we managed to order a nice bottle of Albariño which was not cold enough but the waiter was good enough to bring a dirty glass with four cubes of ice but then the real trouble began...! We ordered a starter of Mussels (Moulle Marine) followed by Prawns and a lobster. To begin with the waiter presented us with a mixed salad which was dumped on the table and which we assumed was a free complement to the fish that we had ordered. It didn't look very appetising so we didn't touch it. However, it turned out that this had been ordered by the other customers and when the mistake was noticed it was taken from our table and dumped on theirs. Keep in mind that there were only two occupied tables but the "waiter" still got it wrong. Further, he also managed to get his thumb in the contents of the plate that he had incorrectly delivered. Spanish waiters are the best in Europe....this was not a trained waiter...it was probably somebody they had pulled in off the street. The mussels arrived. To be fair they we in a fairly nice mature tomato sauce which went well with the bread that we had to ask for! However, they were frozen mussels...overcooked and barely edible. We never complained but hoped that the main courses would be good. Tenerife is surrounded by sea and our mean was the second Saturday in April. No fresh mussels in a month with an "R" in it? We live in Madrid which is 400 Km from the coast and I have never ever been presented with frozen mussels! Of course you know what is next. The prawns and lobster arrived and these were also frozen and reheated in the microwave.... The lobster cost 26.90 Euros for half a tail. It was rock hard and cold in the middle and we didn't even try to eat it...... we sent it back along with prawns...... We left the restaurant hungry and very disappointed ....Robert fue al restaurante con su pareja.
